Rep. Brady: Trump ‘Policy’ Discredits Honorable Soldiers

As an Operation Iraqi Freedom war veteran, I am fully aware of the qualifications a member of the U.S. military must possess in a combat theater. I know what it takes for our American military to be successful in these situations.

And I can say unequivocally that President Trump’s discriminatory directive against brave American military men and women is a narrow-minded, capricious, ill-advised move, offering no substantial benefit to the preparedness of our national defense. If anything, this “policy” would do more to disrupt and harm our military by potentially ripping thousands of fighting soldiers away from their units not because they aren’t capable or qualified, but simply because they are transgender.

During my 34-year Delaware National Guard career, I have trained and served alongside thousands of soldiers. Their sexual orientation or gender identity has no bearing on their ability to serve our country, and it shouldn’t affect their ability to serve our state and our country.

I am proud to serve alongside any Delawarean and American who proudly wears the uniform and puts their lives on the line to protect our way of life. The president would do well to put his phone down and do the same.
