Speaker Schwartzkopf Sets Special Election for 18th District

DOVER – House Speaker Pete Schwartzkopf announced today that a special election for the vacant 18th Representative District seat will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12.

The need for a special election arose when 18th District Rep. Michael Barbieri resigned his seat effective Aug. 3. The winner of the 18th District special election will serve through the general election in November, 2016.

According to state law, a General Assembly special election must take place between 30 and 45 days of the vacancy. Rep. Schwartzkopf will issue a writ of election on Monday, Aug. 10 for a Sept. 12 special election.

“I selected this date to ensure that all candidates have ample time to contact voters in the district,” Rep. Schwartzkopf said. “Being a Saturday, I also wanted to make it as convenient as possible for most people to vote.”
