Melanie George Smith

State Representative, 5th District

Representative Melanie George Smith is a member of the House of Representatives for the 5th District.  Representative Smith’s interest in justice and the legal system led her to pursue a career in law. After graduating magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania in 1994, she attended Georgetown Law School.  She was admitted to the Delaware Bar in 1997, and was honored to serve as a law clerk on the Delaware Supreme Court before she began working at the law firm of Richards, Layton & Finger where she continues to practice today as a lawyer.  Because of her passion for advocacy of children, Representative Smith volunteers as a guardian ad litem, representing children in foster care in family court.

Representative Smith also volunteers with and supports a diverse group of community organizations.  She is a member of the Delaware National Guard Foundation’s Board of Directors, a longtime former member of the Bear-Glasgow YMCA’s Board of Directors, and a Board of Trustees member of SURJ (Stand Up for what is Right and Just).  Perhaps one of her most meaningful commitments has been her mentoring of 4 children for the past 9 years.

Representative Smith believes strongly in justice for everyone and in the absolute necessity of safety and security for her constituents.  As a member of the Joint Finance Committee, she also believes it to be of vital importance that state money is spent responsibly so that Delawareans bear the least amount of burden possible while also ensuring that our most vulnerable citizens receive the services they need.   Representative Smith also considers it her duty and privilege to assist those in the Armed Forces and their families.  Along with serving on the Delaware National Guard Foundation’s Board of Directors, she also serves on the Veterans Affairs Committee.  In fact, Representative Smith’s husband recently retired from 20 years in the Army, and she is proud to be closely connected with members of the Armed Forces.  Serving her constituents is Representative Smith’s first priority, and so her legislative decisions and actions are always informed by what is best for residents of the 5th District.

Representative Smith has been dedicated to serving her constituents and improving the 5th district since she was elected in 2002.
